WATCH LIVE 2:30 PM Governor John Bel Edwards COVID-19 Press Conference
During the last press conference, Governor Edwards stated that the next conference would take place the same time next week, and as of 9:30 AM, there hasn't been an announcement stating otherwise. I will update this post if the time changes. LINKS TO WATCH
We have had 3 weeks going in the wrong directions with cases and hospitalizations. Whatever we discuss today does not reflect what happened this weekend. Why do I mention this? We know Memorial Day was when our numbers stopped getting better and started getting worse. I pray the same is not the same for 4th of July.
We have lost all progress made in June and are seeing some numbers that rival our peak in April.
Today we report 1,891 new cases and case positivity is slightly over 10% (*Mod note: it is 10.4%).
95% of cases today are community spread with only 5% coming from a congregate setting.
Reporting 20 additional deaths for a Toal of 3,231 deaths from COVID-19 for the state of Louisiana.
There is a slight dip in hospitalizations (only 3 less than yesterday) but we are very concerned about the numbers we are currently seeing. We are also concerned with the conversations we are having with the hospital CEO's and Medical directors.
The total of hospitalized with COVID-19 is 1,022, the last time we over this was on May the 19th.
Hospitalizations have doubled since June the 13th.
Recent case growth reflects the majority of cases are young people, with the majority of cases coming from those below 30 years of age.
Difference between today and 2.5 months ago, is 2 months ago our numbers were driven by the New Orleans area, particularly Orleans and Jefferson parishes as well as the river parishes. [Back then] it was only one region of the state that was fueling rapid growth and high numbers. The rest of the state did not see cases to that extent. [Now] we are seeing more even growth in hospitalization and cases across the state. We are beginning to look like Texas.
We have a statewide epidemic, not one that driven by a couple of Regions
Testing sites are slow to get test results returned. Today the delay is due to a lack of reagent in the Commercial Labs. Because they do not have the amount of the necessary component they cannot report their results in a timely manner. This is being worked on as we speak.
We are concerned about the delays because we want to know if people are positive, people may be asymptomatic, may not be taking the proper precautions by quarantining, and be unnecessarily exposing others to the virus.
It is critical for anyone who has been exposed to someone who has tested positive to the virus to self-quarantine for 14 days while you wait for your test results.
If you have been in close contact with someone who is COVID-19 positive, EVEN IF YOU TEST NEGATIVE YOU NEED TO QUARANTINE FOR 14 DAYS you may have contracted the virus but may not have had the appropriate viral load to be detected when you were tested.
Some good news with testing surge testing in Baton Rouge got up and running yesterday, but was short-lived due to the bad weather. The White House Task Force chose 3 cities in the United States for this type of testing. This should tell you all you need to know about whether we have a serious situation and if it is getting worse. WE do and it is.
The goal is to test 5,000 people above the baseline and get a better idea of just how many cases are in the Baton Rouge area.
You do not need to a resident of BR you can live by a nearby parish and get tested.
You can be tested if you are symptomatic, or been exposed.
You can also be tested if you are not symptomatic.
[LIST OF 5 SITES]
Testing will run until July 18th.
Pre-register DoINeedACovidTest.com (registration is not required).
More info can be obtained by calling 2-1-1.
This morning there was a conference call with about 20 hospital CEO and medical directors from across the state to get an update directly from the field.
Nearly every CEO and MD on the call reported sustained increases in COVID-19 hospitalizations. We have completely lost the gains we made over the past couple of months and its all happened in less than 3 weeks. Very concerning.
Some people continue to believe this state of Louisiana continues to do better, that is not the case.
Some regions have more hospitalizations than they ever saw in March or April.
The two hospitals in Lafayette each have more patients than they saw during the previous surge.
Good News: Patients they are seeing are in the hospital are younger and the illness is not quite as acute. Stays are not quite as long, and a smaller percentage of these patents are in the ICU or on ventilators.
Access to Remdesivir is been reduced, no one is out, but with the current caseload, they are concerned about not having adequate supplies.
Hospital capacity is not strictly related to COVID-19. Just because we are in a pandemic does not mean fewer people are going to have strokes, motor vehicle accidents, etc.
The biggest concerns center around staffing and keeping testing supplies and treatments in stock.
Staffing issues are exacerbated by pronounced community spread, causing more staff members to call out because they are positive.
We are seeing a slight change in COVID-19 hospitalized patient demographics as they skew a little more white and male than the previous cases, and as previously mentioned, the average age is down.
Patients are more white, male, and young than before.
Appears now, at least anecdotally, that the hospitalized patients reflect our state demographics as a whole.
FOLLOW MITIGATION MEASURES.
We simply have to wear a mask when we are outside of our homes and interacting with people who are closer than 6 ft.
Everything we are learning from in this country, and around the world, indicate that mask usage is incredibly important to cut down the rate of infections.
Dept. of Health is sharing an additional breakdown of race by parish to be published weekly.
41% of cases are from Black Residents and 29% from White Residents.
The "Great Doctor" Billioux - LDH continues to try to publish more and more data weekly. They have added more information such as the percent of positive cases by regions and hospitalization breakdown by region to the Dashboard. - The difference between this rise in cases and what we saw earlier on is that we have significantly more data which allows us to communicate to you a lot more early warning signs. - We haven't yet seen real big rises in ventilator usage like our neighbors in Texas, but if these curves continue we will probably see these numbers go up. - More individual information was added this week regarding race data. * Louisiana was one of the first states to provide race data for people dying by COVID-19. - LDH now feels comfortable putting out race data by cases. * There is still 19% of cases that they do not have race data. Whether it is from lack of information taken when someone is tested or inability to get information from contact tracing. - Still see there is a disproportionate number of African Americans who are contracting COVID-19 when compared to their white counterparts. * This is also true for our Latin-X communities. - The disparity is starting to narrow, at least for deaths. - It is important that we know where COVID-19 is and how to protect ourselves. - At the regional level, we can see other races beyond the Black and White races available for parish data. - Where is COVID Spreading?

This is the information we are able to get through contact tracing or reports. This represents a significant underestimation of these different settings in the overall cases. Many people are unable to call specifically where they may have been able to pick up the virus, or if they were in a particular bar.
If you go to any setting, whether it is on this list or not, and you do not feel comfortable because people are not following safety standards leave, walk out, protect yourself, and protect your family because that is what is most important. This will allow us to keep as many sectors of the economy open.
These new parts of the Dashboard will be updated every Wednesday.
Questions by Dr. Billioux
Explain the 14-day quarantine... Gov referenced the need to quarantine for 14 days. As we do contact tracing and tell them they may have been exposed, we know that some people's initial urge is to go out get tested. More often than not its been several days since your exposure, so testing is reasonable. If you know you have been exposed today it is not advisable to get a test today. Regardless of being tested, 5 days after exposure and it is negative, you can still turn positive on day 13 or 14. Quarantining is for 14 days regardless of your test result. If you ae been exposed you need to do whatever you can to isolate yourself from other members of your household and certainly do not go out. Why we are seeing cases in college universities when they are currently closed? So there is a couple of data points that we have around that. One is that for the last week or so more than 1/3 have been from 18-29 certainly 29 or less. So that is the same population we would see around college campuses. The other point that I may is that even though the universities may not be open hey still remain centers of our community were people of this age group reside. A university draws a large group from that age range so it is not surprising to see an increase in those locations. Note it is 3 we have identified out of 84 cases. We are trying to engage college students to make sure our message is clear to inform them on the best ways to keep themself safe. Even though are seeing very few people are needing hospitalization and even fewer are dying but if you increase the number of people who are exposed in this age group the number of people who will be hospitalized or who die will also increase. We now have 25,000 active cases statewide, even if these individuals are in a low-risk group for bad outcomes for COVID, but anywhere anyone else goes there is a higher chance of being exposed to COVID-19 whether they are going to bar or a gym the likelihood of catching the virus is higher. Cannot hear question - will update later We definitely see most cases coming from population centers but from the beginning, we have seen cases coming from rural settings. If you look at the map every parish has cases, as we increase testing in smaller parishes we see increases in cases. Some of our smaller parishes rank highest in the amount of COVID cases and deaths in the nation. It is a problem that is truly statewide. This is not a New Orleans or EBR problem, we have COVID cases rises spreading everywhere across the state in the way we did not in March. Are you tracking cases in prisons and correctional facilities? Why isn't this reported on the Dashboard. We track cases wherever they come from. We want to know if they are from individuals that are residing in the setting or staff that work in a setting. We recently partnered with the CDC to do more comprehensive testing in a prison int he North, we work with the DEpt. of Corrections with their testing procedures, same on the parish level to help them support their testing. Individuals' locations are not identified to the public unless they are posing a risk to the public. If we take an example of the bars in Baton Rouge and were not able to identify everyone who had been there we did make a public statement. It is not mandated by the Federal government to be reported like nursing homes are. How can we make restaurants safer We always look at how we can make any setting safer. Recently we are looking at how we can increase enforcement. Having people in these settings to makes sure staff and patrons are doing what they can reduce their risk in these settings. Bars produce a particular risk. You may be leaning in closer to yell over sounds or if you are slowly drinking a drink you are not taking a mask on and off. We are visiting those sites. How many new citations or violations have been given from the LDH Data is not available. Normally we give a warning and then a follow-up visitation and if that is not corrected by the followup visit a citation is not ordered. Are you planning to break up COVID-location exposure by regions No. Anyone one of these settings you should assume it is going on in your neighborhood. What is more important is to make a self-assessment when you enter a setting if it is safe for you to be there or not. Gov. John Bel Edwards
As you can see with the known outbreaks the majority are associated with bars.
Food processing settings dominate those numbers but those individuals work and often times live in close proximity with one another as well.
No matter how you slice and dice the numbers, COVID-19 is probably more present in Louisiana today than it has ever been
Need the people to step up, pay attention, and do their part.
One number that was not previously highlighted, is the amount of per capita cases in the country. We were as high as number 2. AS things got better we were number 10 in per capita cases. *Today we are #5 in country for highest amount of cases per capita
More known COVID-19 in Louisiana today than we have had at any point up to now.
Another number that Gov. Edwards forgot to give is we are in the 8th day and we have reported 137,000+ tests already. The monthly goal set forth by the White House Coronavirus Taskforce is 200,000 tests per month. WE are working hard to know what is going on in Louisiana and get in front of it.
Everyone in Louisiana you have a role to play. Let's take care of one another by wearing a mask. When you wear a mask you are not protecting yourself so much as you protecting others from you, and when they wear a mask they are showing the same courtesy you are.
Wear your mask anytime you re outside of your home, interacting with people who are not part of your household. Stay 6 feet away. Stay home when you re sick. Wash hands with soap and water frequently.
The next press conference will be next week, with no set date or time yet.
Question by Gov Edwards
Earlier you compared us to Texas. Texas is limited crowd size, cracking down on restrictions, and adding a statewide mask mandate. Are you considering limiting crowd sizes, adding restrictions, or instituting a mask mandate?*
We discuss everything I am not currently contemplating a statewide mandate. We are not up to 4 local mandates, Orleans, Jefferson, East Baton Rouge, and Shreveport (he misses Kenner), these are the largest populations of the state.
We want to be fully consistent with the White House Coronavirus Taskforce guidance which recommends that mask mandates be declared by local governments.
Whether we have a mandate or not, we cannot be clearer in the messaging we have been stating for months. **If you are interested in having more customers in stores and in restaurants, then you want mask usage because it decreases the number of cases. Anything that reduces the case count and flattens the curve is ultimately going to be very very helpful. The single most important thing people can do is wear a mask. Gathering sizes are being looked at, in regards to venue capacity right now we may be more liberal with that than Federal guidance we are getting.
Other states are considering closing bars and indoor dining. Seeing the surge in cases have you reconsidered the current restrictions on restaurants and bars? I will tell you that we are getting the guidance directly from the cOronavirus task force as well we have done over 3,100 site visits over the last 10 days or so. Primarily working through the Free Marshall Office we are trying to gain more compliance with existing restrictions and are having success in almost every case. We will be starting our followup visits and if there are repeat violations actions will be taken there. In regards to 50% occupancy for on-premises dining, we are on par with what Texas is doing now. Our decision not to go into Phase 3 was the right decision. I can only imagine what the case would be if we removed to Phase 3. We are paying attention to all of these things and maybe making some adjustments to the restrictions. Currently, we remain focused on getting compliance with existing restrictions. If this proves to be insufficient to get our numbers under control we whatever is necessary to not put a strain on our hospitals. We are not there today but we are on-trend to get there. President Trump says he wants all students returning to school for in person instruction, do you have guidance on what you would like to see with schools reopening? First of all, I would hope aspirationally we want to see our schools open 5 days a week for in-person instruction, but at the same time, we have to balance the interest of preserving the health of students, staff, and faculty. We need to look at what situation is at any given time of the situation, particularly in advance of when that school year will commence. You will see school districts implementing even more measures to protect students, staff, and faculty. Under no circumstance do we anticipate a return to pre-COVID normal. Even if we have in-person instruction on campus it will not look like how it was prior to COVID. Not like to see school assemblies, students eating in lunch, students will not be coming into contact with people who are not their immediate cohorts. It is important to get students back onto campus not just for education but for nutrition, social well being, mental health services, and we have to remember that teachers and school counselors are mandatory reporters when they suspect a child has been subject to abuse or neglect. For all these reasons we ant them back on our campuses but we ate to do it safely. Only recently the CDC related a plethora of guidance. K-12 leaders are pouring over that now to make sure it is incorporated into our plans of reopening. Impossible to know on July 8th what it will look like or whether it will even be possible to open schools a month from now. Question about fall sports and Senators Fields request that K-12 sports be cancelled for the Fall It is a little too early to say on July 8th what this will look like. I appreciate the concerns of Senator Fields, that decision may be a prudent decision but we are not at the time where that decision needs to be made. WE need to know al little more and get a little deeper into the calendar before the decision is made. Question about how Gov. Edwards feels about then comparison of wearing a mask to the holocaust It is utter nonsense and sad. My best advice to anyone who wants to talk about any person or situation today and compare it back to the nazis or the holocaust is not appropriate. Certainly not in this circumstance where mask-wearing is recommended across the world now, including by our own Federal Govern and White House to wear masks to stop a disease that is highly contagious and highly lethal. It just misses the boat on all fronts to compare that to something related to the holocaust. cannot hear question Dr. Birx called me last week they were looking at certain hot posts across the country where you had increases in cases and positivity that were very pronounced. They wanted to assist going into those areas with additional testing, with the hopes of identifying more people with the coronavirus, put them into quarantine, and cool off these hot spots. In EBR we may be seeing this because of the younger demographic, we are a college town, we do not know why we are seeing it but we appreciate the help and hope to get the 5,000 additional tests today between now and July 18th. This is the only federally sponsored testing taking place in Louisiana presently. If you have questions about this testing or how to take advantage of it call 2-1-1 doineedtogetacovid19test.com to pre-register. [location of testing sites]
Cumberland MD - Don't tell me town ain't got no heart..
First of all, live a comfortable, humble and fulfilled life where ever you are. I hope everyone agrees that positive thinking and placing emphasis on qualities is a better practice than emitting energy toward perceived negatives. e.g., Tell your child they are doing something really well instead of focusing on something they aren't.. After growing up in Cumberland and living in a few other cities around the country my opinion of HOME is much better than I expected. We moved back home in 2012 after being out on the range (South and West) for close to 20 years. No two cities are alike, so it's not worth comparing Cumberland to other places we lived. In my opinion the pros out-weigh the cons for this area and I'll state several reasons why. Cumberland and Allegany County have so much to offer if one chooses to see its assets!! This also applies to towns surrounding ALCO and as a whole we are actually a METRO.. Neah sayers? Wiki Cumberland and google metro. Considering that Cumberland is a metro can be confound when comparing to larger cities, but it is true. This is another hidden reason why I believe the area is highly under rated. There is enough culture and diversity to compete with other places but it seems to be hidden in plain sight. Once you get to know the area it is easy to see the unique and interesting qualities. Moving home was actually calming in several ways. A decent house on the west side that needs some tlc for under 100K! My thought was..I'll pay it off as soon as possible! It's an easy way to avoid interest..aka the bankers cut. A renovated house in Cumberland worth 150K would be worth 350K+ in other cities. Btw--I'm currently in need of a vehicle with lower mileage. An affordable home with a relatively low mortgage payment will allow a vehicle update relatively easy. Note: The area offers a level of financial freedom that is more difficult to attain then other cities. Financial freedom is equal to less stress and anxiety in my world. Home improvement contractors are reasonable and comparable to larger cities. Contractors have enough work that it can be tough to get on a schedule at times. Quotes always range from wowzer "that seems high" to hmm "that reasonable". Generally there are plenty of renovation experts in the city ready to work for 15-25 an hour. Last weekend we observed the neighborhood and almost every house in view has been recently updated in one way or another. The past 5 years have been active in terms of home maintenance. It shows there is a sense of pride and this is visible all over. Regular home maintenance is ongoing and it only takes a one project a year to make significant improvements. Keep up the good work Cumberland..it's obvious that people care about their properties. There is deferred maintenance and blight in Cumberland. This is mainly near Interstate 68 or desirable home locations. A few long time rental streets have even seen improvement in recent years. In my opinion, focusing on the enforcement of City housing codes would help and more creative tax breaks could be designed for improvements. With 10K homes in Cumberland, it would not take much to swing this city into an hip spot. The entire area is Walking/Biking friendly. That is without riding on the C&O Canal or Great Allegheny Passage trails. All of Cumberland's neighborhoods are connected with streets and sidewalks. I've never felt unsafe anywhere at anytime. We commonly walked and bike from our door step to downtown and places such as the Constitution Park or Riverside Park with no concerns. We have walked and biked most streets never having a single problem. I lived in South Cumberland for several years and visit family and friends regularly. The unspoken rule is don't bother people and they want bother you. Being friendly or stick to yourself will be reciprocated. Very simple. If you hear anyone say this area is unsafe, I would sincerely disagree. Crime is petty and low tolerance policing is a common theme for folks in poverty. So about work..jobs... WORK FROM HOME is growing and Internet speeds in Cumberland are comparable to most cities. High speed Internet is available through ABB. Otherwise, jobs are here!!! There is a need for experienced higher educated individuals. Basically if you want to work there is work here. In fact, there are a lack of workers in a few career paths. Lets take tech for example. IBM has been growing (400+ employees) and continuously hiring out of town people because the qualified pool of technical staff in the area already have stable careers. There are high, mid and minimum wage jobs. Northrop Grumman is a huge company with high paying jobs and there are many small government jobs at ABL-Rocket Center. UPMC hospital has a number of medical field jobs. Higher education is abundant with several colleges to note. Rocky Gap Resort and Casino employs several hundred. Also there are factories such as American Woodmark, Hunter Douglas and Superfos. That's just naming a few. Over the years I have heard there are no high paying jobs in the area. I highly disagree and rationalize this statement with context. These statements typically come from people seeking 60k+ jobs with no college degree and organized skill-set. My response to these types of comments: "Allegany College of MD has an excellent Continuing Education program full of night and online classes. Additionally, financial assistance is available if needed". Or: "There is a shortage of small restaurants serving healthy food at a reasonable cost:)". Moving forward, the Appalachian mountains are lush and beautiful with comfortable fall, spring and summer temperatures. The variety of hard wood trees is staggering. Wild berries and mushroom galore throughout the mountains. Cumberland has several surrounding State Parks and natural areas. Rocky Gap -Green Ridge State Park - Buchanon - New Germany ..and a few others. The parks and trails are typically empty or maybe a few hikers. A vast majority of the time the forest is all yours without every seeing another person. We are not game hunters (deer, turkeys, etc.) but hunting is prevalent during winter months. Hunting seasons are posted online and DNR regulates policy on public lands. If you meet a hunter and be very very friendly there is a chance they will share a pack of venison steak with you. It is delicious. I've never seen anyone hunting off season on public land in several hundred hiking expeditions. Public land is shared with unconditional respect. Fishing opportunities are abundant. The lakes, creeks and rivers are full of fish. Lake Habeeb has great fishing. Wills Creek, Evitts Creek and the Potomac River all run through Cumberland. Kayaking, Canoeing or floating on a tube can all very relaxing. Being on the water seems to reset the soul. Floating the South Branch Potomac has been popular and this activity is becoming more common on the North Branch of the Potomac. Delfest Bluegrass festival seemed to spawn more floating action on the North Branch. There has been an expansion or update of river access locations along the North Branch Potomac in the past years. There are a wide variety birds in the area because of the River and creeks. Eagles and hawks are around and if you keep an eye out you will surely spot one. In the winter, an assortment of ducks are on the Potomac River just below the Blue Bridge. We take binoculars to the overlook near Canal Place to view all of the types. That's a nice winter air-out activity. If you are not aware, there is a biking trail that spans over 300 miles from Washington DC to Pittsburgh and guess what is in the middle?? CUMBERLAND! Cumberland is the western terminal of the C&O canal. Bike from you door step to DC or Pittsburg in 2-3 or4 days.. Also, Rocky Gap has a 5 mile mountain bike/hiking trail that loops Lake Habeeb. A pro tip: After a long bike ride hit a Dive Bar with really cold beer. Cumberland has more than a few. The D.A.M tavern is one of my favorites. Everyone is friendly and beers are cheap. Most of the dive bars are enjoyable once you understand the culture. Dive bars in this area are another under-rated asset. Warning - the local police have given DUI's to bikers or DUP's to staggerers.. Have you ever heard of duck pin bowling? Look it up! Diamond Bowling Alley is a spot to visit at least once in a lifetime. Bowling clubs fill the lanes several nights a week. It's free to watch. There are quite a few clubs to note. Anything from knitting, Bee keeping to Archaeological and Drone clubs. If you are looking to meet people with like interests there is a good chance it's here. If you don't find what interest you start a club and they will slowly come. Let me emphasize slowly because the area is moving at a slower pace than some cities/metros. This is a Good Thing..relax and enjoy life. There is always tomorrow. Traveling around Cumberland is simple once you know the city. Within 10 minutes one could drive anywhere. Drive 2 hours to Washington DC or 2 Hours to Pittsburgh or take a shuttle. There are countless cities under 2 hours drive. The Amtrak passes through town twice a day. DC to Chicago anyone? The Amtrac will accept bikes. Leave your Cumberland door step, load your bike on the Amtrac and head to Chicago for a long weekend. DC is the other direction and the National mall is free! This is just a few things the Cumberland METRO has to offer :). A positive attitude opens your eyes to endless possibilities. It is April 14th and we are being told that Morel mushrooms are popping up in the lower elevation areas. I hope you enjoyed the information. Pass along good vibes. Don't tell me this town ain't got no heart - you just gotta poke around
JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #5 - Round 1 Wrap Up Part 1
The results are in for Match 29. It was the final few hours of the Taste of Fortuna, an event which had transformed so much since its inception, yet still remained the most popular of public showcases for culinary creations of all levels of acclaim, persons passionate about food, though increasingly joined by those simply wishing to peacock. As much as their camera crew tried to watch the action of the player characters, of course, the two most famous local celebrities who had received some considerable camera time had at once been commenting live over the events in their own ways. There wasn’t much time left on the show’s production schedule; this episode, though the final one shot for the first season, would be the first Being So Normal to air… Capitalizing off the recent success and gossip that was sure to come of such a unique Taste of Fortuna, Producer Million Dollars had shrewdly suggested. These hours of footage and Cairo spending so much of it AWOL would lead to a crunch time hell for post-production, on their own side in particular, but damn if it wouldn’t be worth it. CaraMel Dansen, wide-eyed and mouthed, looked over the sheer positivity which had spread like whatever was the opposite of a plague among every single booth there, recommending one another and especially Bad Apples, and to the cameras she couldn’t help but say, free of any vitriol, “they’re not at each other’s throats, trying to one-up one another, or anything like that… Everyone here is pointing guests towards that big cake, but they also all seem so. So appreciative of each other’s foods, one another’s skills, and people are hitting up stall after stall until their wallets are empty! Has it been this cooperative in over a century? Has the event found touch with its-” “Yeah, that’s nice and all, but it’s hardly Stand action,” Well, in one case, their spirit was. Cairo’s Peach Pit, in particular (still drawn by Boy George!), serving hosting duties on their user’s behalf, took attention away from CaraMel’s musings and towards the sole booth which, rather than riding this wave that gradually lifted everyone else up, had sought to do its own thing heavily, resulting in a stand that had bursts of massive popularity in between the lower numbers of the round in ‘off’ time, “check out what’s going on there, though… Hell of a costume, right? It reminds me of that scene in ‘The Last Unicorn’ where they stuck a fake horn on the real thing so average people could see it..! A taste of a live Stand battle for everyone!” “Stay back!” Zebra, as the man with the even stranger real name of ‘Ice Station’ was nicknamed, warned, “the sun’s down. It’s too dangerous!” His own Stand, cloaked and dubbed ‘Horror-kun,’ beckoned a finger towards London Lovett, whose eyes lit up. His voice, quivering and austere, asked, “it’s time?” and Horror-kun simply nodded. In and above the crowd, an epic battle, astoundingly improvised in such short notice, ensued, teleporting about, scythes swiping, fists flying, both persons involved in the battle proud to see it, only for London to fall to his knees. “I’m not enough…” He whispered, gazing out to the crowd who had, finally, become pretty sure that this was a bit, and safe to approach. As his grinning partner stomped his feet, he grew louder. “I need your belief in me. I need to feel your pulse resounding through my chest! Come on, let me hear you stomp to the beating of your hearts! Lend me your power - your spirits - and I can do this!” Not long after, he leapt forward, dealing the finishing blow and causing ‘Horror-kun’ to disappear, the crowd cheering as he stood there. Of course, the baggage boy who volunteered himself knew his part here. Sure, he wasn’t really usually the type to cheer with childlike glee, but his blood was pumping and he needed to steer this show into a way for these people to buy food. “YEAH!” He made himself yeah, “YEAH! You were like, the coolest! The way you were all, bam! And he was all, pow! You guys are the. COOLEST.” Then he looked to a piece of paper in his hand. “Oh, uh… Yeah! Hey everyone! Thanks for helping London save the world from the forces of Horror-kun! And to show how grateful we are, everything’s 30% off for the rest of the night! Come and get it!” “Now that is a damn good show,” the sentient Stand said, cool-toned and impressed, leaning towards CaraMel slightly. “Like, even you’ve gotta admit, something like that is top-tier.” Through the excitement of London Lovett’s battle with Horror-kun, the sentient Stand’s eagerness to see it, and the massive crowd going and buying things up in the aftermath, something seemed to snap in the young chef, whose lip trembled as she stormed off. Th-that was so… It’s everything I don’t want this place to be..! Her feelings were petty, on some level mad that people were having a good time in a way that she didn’t like or approve of, that people might learn from this example, and so she ran off, booking it through the stalls and trying to force a massive smile. “Like an eagle-eyed foodie, I spy trouble…” Purple remarked, having himself thoroughly enjoyed his time with BADD here, in spite of Pandora Anada saddling him with the nickname ‘Afton’ early on in spite of his lack of slaughter perpetration. Pandora Anada, then, concurred with a frown, “one of our cohosts, the one who ran this, she’s ran off… This doesn’t make the game over, does it?” Ryuga, having been focusing on food, looked the scene over, tugging at his shirt collar. “Yeah, I’ve seen that kind of look before… You two take over one last time. I’m going to talk to her.” Which was how, sulking at a bench, Ryuga encountered CaraMel, simply standing there quietly, unsure quite how to broach the conversation until she looked over at him, holding out a piece of the ‘Concept of Love’ cake he’d made and sliced up. “It’s, uh… On the house. Hey, I don’t know you well, but are you okay?” “Thank you…” CaraMel whispered, calming herself with a forkful of the stuff, shuddering and smiling wistfully as the experienced baker felt it along her tongue and vanish into her gullet. “It’s amazing…” And then, she found herself able to speak more, looking at the rush of customers to Elephant Bones. “That… Street performance stuff. None of it is about the food here, and that’s… That’s what this whole thing should be all about! Passionate chefs, and goodwill between them, and-” When he realized she wasn’t going to finish, Ryuga answered, shaking his head. “Chef Dansen… They’re doing the same thing that we are, in their own way. Sure, that sort of thing isn’t to my tastes, either, but I can still see the effort behind it, how cool it is, their skill with running a menu of their choice, and I’ve stopped by there myself at least once during this festival; what they’re serving is really good, too. You shouldn’t… Make yourself miserable because people are having a good time.” “But it’s getting more attention than anyone’s food, and if it takes them to the top people might-” “If they win, that’s fine by me,” Ryuga answered then, “I mean, sure, I would like to, but I didn’t want to be on Cairo’s show in the first place, any more than you wanted them here… Even if we did, it wouldn’t be okay to hold whatever happens against them. Pandora and I, we just did what we’d meant to here anyway, with the added pressure of cameras. I don’t think I regret a moment of this… It’s been a great day. That’s what matters to me most right now.” He looked around then. “I’d love to talk more, but… I should probably get back to our stand now. Are you going to be alright?” He waited to see her nod, looking genuinely slightly better, and then started off. “Talk to you later, then.” As he left, CaraMel could have sworn that she’d seen a strange form, one different yet similar to the dragons which had only briefly emerged to help cut the cake, perched on Ryuga’s back, flickering in and out of existence quickly. I don’t even know what his Stand can do, but it can change..? He doesn’t even seem to have noticed it… With a massive sale on the Elephant Bones coming into play in the final minutes, Bad Apple continued to sell food as they were. When 9 PM hit, all that was left was for the final last-minute orders on either side to be made. Pandora was humming happily and floating the orders to people with a, “remember always to live, laugh, love… Have a good lovely evening also.” Purple chuckled. “You, Pandora Anada, are yet the only person I have met to say that and sound so non-artificial… As if the words are truly profound to you.” Zebra, too, was finishing up serving orders, then, the airport baggage boy and London disappearing behind the grill to handle those final discount orders. Despite the booming attention they were getting, he couldn’t help but wonder about the pending results. “Did we play it up enough..? We were fighting uphill this entire time, and I can’t shake the feeling…” “Dude, relax,” the stoner helping London said, his overplayed enthusiasm for the sake of helping him win chilling to his usual mellow wit, “we’ve been pulling in numbers… I mean, so has everyone else, but we’ve been pullin’ in more, and a rising tide raises all ships, yeah?” “You make good points…” London agreed in his post-’battle’ calm, “you should come work at Elephant Bones full-time. We could always use more, and that bird you admire so much is there…” “Huh?” He seemed confused. “You, uh… Do realize I live literally the entire ‘Earth’ away… Uh. A-D to you outsiders. Biit of a commute for a guy with a suspended driver’s license… Honored, though, really, just to be asked.” Cairo’s voice came through then, for one of the first times in hours, where they were walking around on a date, that anyone had glimpsed the supposed host. “Alright, everyone, I can see you’ve completed every transaction. No way to pad it out now… Fall in, it’s time for us to announce results!” The six were exhausted, then, and shared some of their thoughts with the cameras when prompted hard to, but otherwise, waited patiently, sweatily, for the well-groomed host and the also very sweaty and tired-looking event organizer, Cairo and CaraMel, standing side-by-side, to announce the results. “So?” CaraMel asked, at least in a better, if resigned, mood from before, “who won this show of yours? Your people have been filming for nearly twelve hours after all…” “…Being So Normal is a show dedicated to the celebration and uplifting of the Stand User, to show the world what we’re capable of so we don’t have to live like some secretive underground.” They turned towards London in particular, earning a mildly disappointed but overall even face from BADD, but slight satisfaction from them. “Stand Users can be heroes, superstars, top-tier community figures, and we can encourage the best of the world while being the best in the world. I thoroughly believe that, and I know who for damn sure lived up to the spirit of this show more… And the people who lived up to that are definitely London, Zebra, and… This guy!” “I did what I could,” Purple tried to quietly console. The bagboy elbowed him. “Their next line is a ‘but,’ I can feel it…” “But,” Cairo continued, “the numbers don’t lie… On top of boosting the sales of every single person around here, and making them want to stick around, Ryuga, Pandora, ‘Afton,’ you wound up serving exactly as many customers in the end, to the one, even if you were just… Running a restaurant stall. You barely even gave us any prime Stand footage..!” Despite his words earlier, Ryuga looked like his heart skipped a beat, genuinely proud of his accomplishment. The smile typical to Pandora’s face grew wider, and Purple Kid, then, spoke with renewed vigor, “I did not at once doubt us! I’m an invaluable ally, aren’t I?!” The winner is the Taste of Fortuna, Cairo’s episode having no winner and both teams scoring 70!

BADD GUYS managed to catch up in votes in the nick of time, but in the end, easily the most consistent and frequent votes were for those calling to make the match a tie.
CaraMel, for whatever her reasons, asked to step away with London and Zebra, wanting to tell them something somewhere more quiet and ensuring them it was important. Cairo, of course, was professionally obligated to not act bitter about how one half of the side didn’t really have much Stand shenaniganry whatsoever, so they spoke with a smile. “That was… Quite the showing, seriously! I don’t know that Peach and I would’ve gone about it the same, but… Not bad, yeah. Good work rivaling each other completely and leaving no conclusive winner!” “I’m proud of what me and the youngsters did, yes,” Pandora agreed, nobody able to tell if she had missed the tension here or simply was billowing past it with positivity, the slightly intimidating woman a never-ending wellspring of good vibes, after all. “Good food we can stand by, happenstance resolving in our way, I’m sure there is some love in the air… All of it is very nice-as-icing.” “We really were just trying to make the best Taste of Fortuna possible… This was our way, and Elephant Bones had theirs,” Ryuga said, slightly uncomfortable at the host’s word choice and implicit disappointment in their lack of a ‘loss,’ but refusing to let it ruin the good feeling he’d had about the day. “And you got us to be in your show, in spite of us adamantly refusing.” They could tell that even the most skillful editing possible probably couldn’t make BADD GUYS look like the episode’s antagonistic side here, especially with all the positive talk about them, so c’est la vie. He was right, after all; there was still a really good episode buried in these hours of footage! “Everyone is the victor here, Cairo,” Purple reassured them, “me most of all, I like to think, but fret not, for soon, days from now, Being so Normal will drop! And oh, the fantastic episodes you’ve filmed right here in Agora Row for its first season.” “Yeah, you’re right… We’ve had some bumps along the road,” they said, “but stuff like that building match in the warehouse, and even that fight in sOOp at the mall ended as good as they could. It was just a matter of course that with CaraMel and Peach watching it, the Taste of Fortuna would go well too.” “Bumps along the road?” Ryuga asked in a somewhat tired, dry tone. “Never mind… I’d like to start cleaning up now, if you don’t mind.” “Next to godliness and have a good home,” Pandora remarked with a nod, “ahhh… Stop by again some time, won’t you? But we’d rather you not trick us into being on your show more…” A tall, broad, bald man in sunglasses, utterly eclipsed by an even bigger man beside him, were also among the last of the crowds to disperse. Chief Churchyard held a piece of cake and plate in one hand, a plastic fork in the other, both utterly eclipsed in size by his palms as he took demure bites. Mr. Jones was coolly sipping warm bone broth. “Mm, I gotta say, Church, I came here to get some tips outta watchin’ a young legend like Cairo film their show live, but this cuisine is top-of-the-line! Lucky you gettin’ the last slice of cake, though.” “Feels like a million bucks,” Churchyard answered between bites. “Somethin’ like this is just what we needed after the last few months… What with the fatal duel at that baseball game,” he paused then, as if stopping himself from saying ‘which Cairo filmed,’ “and the serial killer turning out to be that girlfriend of yours, so many people moving away and selling their houses… You hear the buyer’s gonna tear those down and build new apartments or something? Black Angel hasn’t been around as much lately either… Think I scared ‘em off?” “Heh, you sound concerned ‘bout the feelings of someone who beat my boys blue. They a personal friend, officer?” Jones answered, chuckling, sipping more broth as Churchyard visibly tensed. “Relax, just messin’ with ya. You’re too good-hearted sometimes… Hurts more people than it helps for a lawman to be like that.” Churchyard blinked, visible through his glasses. “You… seriously think that?” Nearby, a trio of young women glanced towards the very tall men, all various degrees of cross. Jillian Heart shuddered a bit, backing from them. “After all he did, all that’s been said about him, he’s just out in the open socializing like it’s nothing… He should be rotting in some cell, not laughing it up with an officer.” “That guy… He’s a pain in the ass, and Mr. Jones is gonna make a monster out of him.” ‘Lou’ Reed was wearing a ‘#FreeStone’ t-shirt under her open leather jacket, hair down and kept out of her eyes by a black headband, clenching her fists. “We have a chance to set things right here and now, before he can corrupt anything else.” Violet, clutching her still scarred torso, frowned. “Lou, not here… We’re in a crowded public place, and people are trying to have a nice time. Don’t throw yourself into this…” “Ruining one night to stop so many others from being ruined too sounds worth it to me,” she answered, stepping forward again. “Jill, text Gioia, she should still be around here. Together the two of us can easily-” She gasped a bit, wincing and feeling a sharp if mild stinging in the back of her neck. “Nngh, how big are mosquitoes around here..?” She rubbed at her neck, blinking and looking at her friends. “Uh, totally spaced out there… What were we talking about?” Violet hurried in front of her now, giggling a bit, “oh, just small-talk shit, ya know how it is. About how glad we are to just be having a nice time, Stand Users all over and not being in mortal danger… Ya know? Stuff ‘round all the Campuses have been, like, totally hectic lately.” “Heh…” Jill mused, playing along with the shift in the scene. “That’s Midnight Sun for you… Arts, Culinary, Law, Social Work, whatever school, you’re gonna have a time and a half.” “I’m used to worse, so honestly attending there might be kinda chill if anything,” Lou answered, shrugging with a casual grin, “I’m just happy you’re all alive and stuff… And have you tried all of the food around here? I’m gonna be so sick tomorrow but it’ll be sooo worth it for how I feasted today.” “That’s the spirit…” Violet said with some amusement. “I mean, even with stuff like that fight in Professor Kirk’s sculpting room and the Institute Library, you can still do shit like campus games, yeah? …and I still have no idea how the Assassin game I ran to mess with those guys went in the end.” “You made people play that game to jerk ‘em around and then ditched before it ended?” Lou raised an eyebrow. “That is rich.” A perfect set of ears overheard all of that and so much more, to the point where it was a little bit overstimulating to try and discern literally everything, honestly… But Metra Doria, who Los Fortuna and the world knew as TD/MD, wasn’t one to shy away from an event like this, where exactly the sort of people she might be seeking could be. She was accompanied, of course, by her ever reliable agent and friend, Thutmose, who in recent times had seen a 100% decrease in his role of cowing to outside pressure to turn Stand Users on one another, concerns of retaliation for which had prompted him to spend more time around Metra again. “That’s definitely the voice of ‘Worm,’ from those streams… But I can’t really make sense of it,” she thought aloud, using her ally as a soundboard. “I mean, these are guys who turn their own casinos into arenas and stuff, and he doesn’t seem like the sort… You got any hunches?” “Unfortunately, I do not…” Thutmose shook his head. “When that performance at the Alexander Dickinson went so amazingly, it saved our friendship and our professional relationship, and I am completely grateful for that, but Mr. Sins isn’t quite as willing to chat my ears off anymore now that he doesn’t stand to gain much from me besides a punching bag…” “So we’re at a bit of a roadblock on all sides,” Metra said with a pout, before remembering an incident shortly after that fight in traffic they showed to the dark web. She’d said in private a bit ago, “I was supposed to meet with one of those guys after that, but all I got when I went down to the meeting spot was a note with this weirdly perfect, almost machine-like handwriting from him, saying something about how they were followed by the winner of that fight, he got spotted, and now there was too much heat to hang around and chat… Talk about unlucky, huh? Blocked because people were trying to do the same thing… “Well,” she said in the present, “we’ll just have to try harder to get to the bottom of it all, won’t we? Worst-case scenario, though, even if I never get another lead again, at least I just had a nice day without any trace of that Fox guy hanging over my shoulder.” Peres Straviat’s Clinic, near The Devil Blue, Waterfront District, 9:56 PMPeres Straviat sat back in front of a computer, mouse in her hand while her stand took care of the keyboard. Together, they navigated through a mess of spreadsheets, contracts, and other such bits of classified information. The screen was currently open to a sheet documenting The Devil Blue’s Niter sales and the expenses spent on gathering them, and the situation was… complicated. The past few months had been turbulent, with a boom in their supply followed almost immediately by a drastic drop (the latter of which likely occurred due to The Ocean Soul having been defeated by an incredibly annoying “villain” and a somewhat less annoying dog.) The Ocean Soul hadn’t been killed, but it had been weakened and had become incredibly cautious, leading to the drop. With the drop in the luxury good’s supply came an increase in demand, and the only people capable of keeping up with it were The Devil Blue, in no small part due to Peres’s own assistance. Following her research into the effects of The Ocean Soul’s ability, Peres had figured out how to create imitations of Niters with her stand. They weren’t as good as the real thing, but when people wanted them that bad, they certainly accepted a small drop in quality if it let them get their hands on Niters. Then again, the Niters didn’t matter much - they weren’t the true focus of her research, and at the end of the day, this was nothing more than a “milestone” along the way. What truly mattered was not the Niters, but managing to capture The Ocean Soul. Before the train of thought could continue, Peres was interrupted by three loud knocks at the door. “Hello~! Peres, are you in here?” from behind the door came the familiar voice of Modern Holiday, her business partner. “Whatever, I’m coming in either way!” and with that, he opened the door, and light flooded into the room as the bright-eyed man stood in the doorway. In his hands were multiple plastic bags with a “Taste of Fortuna” label, filled to the brim with all sorts of food. “I see you brought something along with you. How was the festival?” Peres asked. “Oh, it was great! There’s so much good food there, I’m stuffed!” Holiday jubilantly said. “And you still couldn’t help but bring more with you.” Peres jokingly remarked. “Of course I couldn’t! This is a once-in-a-year opportunity and I’m going to make the most of it! Not to mention that you haven’t gotten to- OH! I forgot to mention that I saw a stall for the Elephant Bones there!” “The Elephant Bones? Were they the restaurant that that ‘Glitch’ woman you met a while back worked for?” “Yeah! They did a whole big routine there as well, giving one of their stands a costume and everything! And there was this other group of stand users that made a massive cake and showed it off to everyone, and their food was so good! Here, see for yourself - I got you a piece!” Holiday said, beaming, as he took a small box out of the bag and placed it on Peres’ table, before opening it to reveal a slice of cake and handing her some plastic cutlery. “Well, it sounds like you enjoyed yourself.” Peres said, taking a chunk out of the cake and tasting it. “Hm. Good cake.” “Yeah! I knew you would like it!” Holiday said, placing the plastic bags by the entrance of the room, before grabbing a chair and moving it over so that he could sit down in front of Peres. Holiday stretched back in his chair and yawned before speaking. “So, putting that aside - Cairo’s gonna launch Being So Normal soon, yeah? You think we’re good to go before Vitus starts harassing us even more than usually?” “Hmm… Hard to tell. We’ve made significant progress in our preparations for capturing the Ocean Soul, but once the footage from the fight against the Ocean Soul is publicly released, I’m certain that Vitus will make his move as well. We might have managed to prepare quite a bit ourselves, but he’s got significant influence, both within ODIN and outside of it, and I’m certain he’ll try to use sabotage in the future.” “Yeah… Well, at least we’re better off than we would have been had we not cooperated with Cairo in order to get the footage from the fight, yeah? Who knew that the cameras would end up capturing that weird hermit talk about the secret to summoning the Ocean Soul? Without us finding out about that before Vitus, we’d have been so screwed!” In response, Peres shrugged, but it was clear that she was still somewhat antsy about the whole situation. “Possibly. Not that it matters anymore - we got the footage, and we’re taking steps to make sure that our plans will be successful. No use thinking about what might have happened.” Holiday sighed. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. Still… I can’t help but get nervous about this all, you know? We can’t underestimate Vitus, or any of the other stand users in this city for that matter, and if we screw this up, then… Well, I’d really rather not think about that, and I’m sure you don’t either, yeah?” “You’re right in that regard, but you know I’m not backing down on this - it’s a risk we have to take. I… I can’t afford not to.” Back in Agora Row, a public park near Sweet FA Mall - Roughly 10:45 PM The Elephant Bones trio had a bad feeling about getting dragged out into the empty park by the host who had been less receptive to their show, especially when she proceeded to say she needed to do some stuff back at the Fest and would be back in a moment, proceeding to run late as hell in the process. Still, though, in time, CaraMel Dansen came back, enthusiastically greeting them with a, “hey, hey, sorry for the wai~t! You just get so busy when you’re organizing the largest culinary event in the city and your coworker on the University Board drops an entire reality TV event on you about it, you kno~w?” The bagboy nodded, sagely. “I know the feeling… Happens to me every hour on the hour.” “I’m not in a joking mood, little man.” She snapped on the man not too many years younger than her, and quite taller, before turning to London and Zebra. “Anyway, uh… Sorry if I read as hostile there. Nerves, tensions, life’s work, you know how it is.” London, having no small supply of exciting stories, some in the not-fun way, nodded. “I can feel it… We got really on edge too, just knowing Bad Apples were here, and then it all wound up good. Ryuga even came by and just… Talked to us, during the proceedings.” “All that walking around and we tied them…” Zebra was still a bit in disbelief. “But you didn’t need to drag us all out here just to apologize, right? What’s the real reason for the secrecy?” “Well, I so completely just came out here to apologize off the cameras that that’s part two of my apology, actually!” She popped her foot. “See, things are about to get really hectic in the Slums, for… The first time in awhile. Because people are moving in to try and arrest a very very important person, by the time it’d take you to commute back there, it’ll probably be on the verge of a chaotic full scale war in the streets!” She brought her hands to her cheeks Home Alone style and shook in place somewhat. “So poor, poor Elephant Bones is probably one of the least safe places to be right now… I’d suggest you check into some nice hotel or something and just wait it out, maybe warn any of your friends to hang low!” “Danger out there, huh..?” London asked, “honestly, you’ve just made me more curious about whatever’s going on out there… Though I imagine you’re only telling us this because we can’t do anything to get in its way.” “Yep! I may have been against the move, but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna undermine my colleagues! You can’t get in the way, so I wanted to suggest you get out of the way as a show of good faith! At least for a few days…” “I don’t suppose that’s making you reconsider our job offer at all, is it..?” Zebra asked the bagboy. “Yeah nah, not really vibing with that… But hey, if your place gets wrecked in whatever riots or police attacks or whatever else goes on out there, I’ll do ya a solid and foot the bill to have one of the best builders where I live come take care of it. Just, uh… Don’t get too chummy with him if that happens, yeah? Old man like, actually kinda gets uncomfortable at that kinda stuff.” London, Zebra, and the Elephant Bones gang don’t have any way to change what’s happening in the Slums right now, but a LEGO sculptor and the most mushroom-based of the city’s motorcycling vigilantes are fighting the Slum Queen, who stands accused of the murder of Andrew Tiffany. A day or two ago, I posted here if I can get a list of all types of classification of key, value is OSM. I was referred to : https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_Features. Which was helpful because it was legit and contained all the information I needed. But as it is way too big. It was hard for me handle. So I wrote a python script and made it easy. Source code is available under MIT license in GitHub : https://github.com/maifeeulasad/OSM-feature-extract-python. Anyone fell free to contribute and find out issues in the project. Thanks everyone, specially to u/pietervdvn and u/maxerickson. Here is the result, the latest version of the result can be found in readme in GitHub. I will be trying to host these data as much as possible. Anyone interested can contact with me. For API call this : API features
Not exhaustive, feel free to add suggestions. Where to Stay I’ll leave the research about specific hotels up to you, but here are some general options to consider. ...in the city: Inner HarboDowntown
Chain hotels (Holiday Inn, etc.)
Close to the action (about 5-10 minute walk to stadium, give or take)
several parking garage options
Inner Harbor with dining and shopping is within minutes by foot
Harbor East
Adjacent to the Inner Harbor
a little more “upscale” with fine dining restaurants and big brand shopping
a few of the “luxury” chain hotels
15-20 minute walk to the stadium (more like 30 at a leisurely pace)
parking garage for this location
Other hotels near the stadium
on the other side of the stadium
near the Horseshoe Casino.
“budget” hotel options
limited access by foot to the city
Away from the stadium
a few unique hotels nestled into historic architecture
mostly in The Mount Vernon neighborhood
popular (but expensive) is the Ivy Hotel on Biddle Street
AirBnB
Look for spot in Federal Hill for closest access to stadium
...outside of the city Near the airport
business/chain hotels
city is accessible by light rail with stops directly in front of the stadium
easily connects by highway to the city
south of the city, good location if you want to do a Washington, DC, day trip
Hunt Valley
North of the city
a number of business hotels
suburban shopping and dining experience with a “town center” nearby
city can be reached by light rail or a short drive down I-83
Towson
college town on the northern outskirts of the city
By car, Charles Street is the easiest way south to the stadium and attractions
large mall and plenty of bars, but expect a younger crowd.
Getting to/from the Stadium By foot (if staying nearby) - self explanatory By car - If you plan on parking on a stadium lot or on the street nearby the stadium:
From I-95: take exit 52 for Russell Street, expect traffic. Or take exit 53 to enter downtown.
From 295/Baltimore-Washington Parkway: follow to end of highway which changes over to Russell St. at the city line.
From I-83: Follow south until it changes over to President St. entering downtown
Public transportation - light rail with several park-and-ride stops north and south of the city. Terminal stops at Hunt Valley and BWI UbeLyft - you won’t be able to get too close to the stadium due to blocked off streets/traffic/and tailgating on the streets around the stadium. Plan to be picked up and dropped off towards the outskirts of the stadium area Parking Stadium Lot - convenient if you don’t mind paying. Will deal with the most traffic using this option Private lot - a large number of lots charging $15-30 for parking. Many feature official or unofficial large tailgates Street - if you arrive early enough there is free street parking on the west side of the stadium. This is in the area of Wicomico Ave. You can set up your tailgate right where you park Tailgating Tailgating at Ravens games is not limited to stadium lots. Many will park their cars on surrounding streets and set up their tailgate right there. Additionally, there are several private lots that host their own tailgate parties with food and drink for purchase. There are also all-inclusive tailgates. Cops are around directing traffic but they turn a blind eye to public drinking laws. In my opinion, the tailgate scene outside of the stadium is where you really want to be. If you are looking to join an open tailgate, I'd look for a larger group. Your best bet is to pay for an all-inclusive tailgate (it sounds like Jimmy's Seafood and a few others host these) or to simply wonder into an open one (some are open without paying to enter or for parking). Offering food or drink to members of the tailgate will usually get you in on good terms and provide a way to connect. The Firehouse is near the stadium and a great option if you don’t want to deal with paying to get on a private lot or setting up a whole tailgate on the street for 2 or 3 people. It has a bar inside and bathrooms (nice) and food and drink also for sale outside. There is also the Game-day Warehouse, but I don’t know much about that. Attractions (in no particular order)
Inner Harbor
National Aquarium
Science Center
Edgar Allan Poe House
Lexington Market
Washington Monument
Babe Ruth Sports Legends Museum
Baltimore Museum of Industry
Fort McHenry
Reginald F. Lewis Museum
Visionary Arts Museum
Baltimore Museum of Art
The Walters museum
Horseshoe Casino
Washington, DC, day trip
Food & Drink (just a selection)
Brewer’s Art - in-house craft beer and upscale dining (or bar food in the basement)
Woodberry Kitchen - Nationally renowned fine-dining, make a reservation
Johnny Rad’s - contender for best pizza in Baltimore
Jimmy’s Famous Seafood - MD seafood, crab cakes
Koco’s Pub - Little-known location with what many consider Baltimore’s best crab cake
R House - food court and bar with stalls from local chefs
Mount Vernon Marketplace - features several drinking and eating spots
W.C. Harlan’s - Craft cocktails (off the beaten path)
Max’s Taphouse - huge selection of beers around the world
Club Charles - might catch a glimpse of Baltimore legend Johns Waters at this hipster bar
Chaps Pit Beef - a little outside the main city and next to a strip club, Baltimore’s famous pit beef
The Charmery - homemade ice cream, best in Baltimore
Clavel - Mezcal, tequila, and upscale Mexican food (think classy not taco truck)
Breweries & Distilleries Baltimore has a strong craft beer scene. Some favorites:
Heavy Seas (a little outside the city)
Monument Brewing
Union
Peabody Heights
Diamondback
Waverly Brewing
Guinness (newly opened, several experimental beers usually on tap)
Sagamore (whiskey)
Baltimore Whiskey Company
Neighborhoods Baltimore is a city of neighborhoods. Here are a few worth visiting depending on tastes.
Federal Hill - young professionals and college kids on the weekends, many bars surrounding Cross Street Market
Fell’s Point - East of the Inner Harbor, sits on the water. Probably the largest concentrations of bars in Baltimore. Established residents of all ages and young crowd on weekends. Great music featured most nights in many bars.
Mount Vernon - historic attractions, a few great bars and restaurants
Hampden - quirky and hip, “the Avenue” features a number of unique bars and restaurants. During december check out the lights on 34th street
Canton - young professionals and established resident’s, a bit more calm than Fells Point or Fed Hill but still lively weekend crowds.
Station North - Baltimore’s arts district. Many would consider grimey or questionably located near some rougher parts of the city, but a few good bars and restaurants (Pen & Quill, Joe Squared). Also location of Charles Theater.
Little Italy - authentic italian dining between the Inner Harbor and Harbor East.
Pig Town - next to stadium, some tailgating spills into this area.
Safety Baltimore has a reputation as a rough and dangerous city, and its not unfounded. The vibe of an area will literally change when crossing on street into a different neighborhood. Know where you are going. Most crime occurs at these crossover points. At the tailgates, kids will try to sell you cookies they bought from the dollar store. Some will say they are raising money for a cause. Some might be lying some might be telling the truth. Also people trying to sell bootleg Ravens gear. Totally harmless but something to be aware of. Use street smarts, watch out for the squeegee kids, be aware of your surroundings. The typical stuff. If you keep to the suggestions in this thread you should not run into any problems.
Without taking his order, the bartender set a margarita on the rocks in front of Walter. “So, what brings you to beautiful Mexico, amigo?” asked the bartender, whose nametag read Eduardo. Walter Raymundo looked up at the bartender and considered his answer. A 45-year-old widower, Walter had arrived at Playa de Sueños resort yesterday. He looked at his phone – 5 PM. Yesterday’s highlight was a group catamaran sailing lesson followed by a sedate dinner for one at the resort restaurant. Tonight, he was trying his luck at the pool bar; hopefully he’d make it past 9 PM. “Oh, what you’d expect. I’m part of a Z Survivor group. Package deal – pay a little extra and the organizers promise a 2-1 ratio of women to men,” Walter admitted with a rakish smile. Eduardo chuckled. “So, my friend, you’re like the rest of us - looking for love.” Walter gave a grunt that might have been agreement but said nothing. He was looking for love, sure, but he couldn’t ignore his work, either. It had taken him 5 years to talk himself into traveling from his home in Tucson, AZ, to the nearest “safe” resort in the West. Playa de Sueños, located in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, was purpose-built to resist zombie attacks. Walter lost his wife, Evie, in the great West Coast Zombie Uprising of 2022 and he was uneasy. Not because of the zombies – by all accounts the Mexican government was far more ruthless in exterminating the living dead than the United States. No, the Mexican government didn’t care that the long-rumored zombie cure was, by all accounts, just around the corner, or that with the help of a powerful drug cocktail a small number of “remediated” zombies were currently being trained to complete menial jobs in some parts of the United States. The Mexican Guerreros contra los Muertos were known to shoot first and not ask questions. On top of that, the resort was on a manmade island with strict security protocols including lots of men with automatic rifles. Walter was uneasy because he hadn’t been on a date since his wife died – hadn’t been intimate with another human being since Evie had been ripped from his arms by an angry horde 5 years ago. Now here he was, sipping a margarita by the pool, sizing up the female population. There were some beautiful women for sure, but as he feared he was 20 years older than most of the female guests. Middle aged women were in particularly short supply all over the Americas. For some still unknown reason, zombies attacked women more than men, and women over 40 most of all. Once attacked, older women were more likely to convert or die than any other demographic besides the very young and the very old. Solid numbers were hard to come by but something like 5% of the human population in America had been wiped out since the first flare-up in 2011. Some 15 million plus gone, and women over 40 made up 2/3 of that number. The rarest commodity of all were survivors, those who’d been attacked but made it out the other side. It was believed that less than 1% of all humans attacked by zombies survived. Most confirmed survivors were secured at government sites being tested and studied. Most, but not all. The west coast of America had taken the brunt of the zombie uprisings. Southern California alone lost 3 million to zombie attacks and another 2 million to outmigration. Zombies liked it hot but not too hot, dry but not too dry. They also appear to have a sense of humor as the government was now paying families to move into the few inhabitable neighborhoods in LA and San Diego. Houses that would have sold for millions were now being given away. Other than a few mild flareups in New York, Houston, and a handful of other cities, the middle of the country and the east coast were largely untouched. The average suburbanite in New Hampshire or Ohio watched the holocaust unfold across their TV screens, safe in their living rooms, while Los Angeles and San Diego nearly burned to the ground. Walter came out of his reverie. “Thanks for the drink, Eduardo. Very good. But I didn’t order it – how’d you know I’d like it?” “I took a chance – you seem like the tequila type,” said a woman’s voice. Walter looked to his left just as a woman started walking toward him. Walter took her in. Not your typical beauty but interesting none the less. She was perhaps 5 feet 5 inches tall, brown skin the color of melted caramel. Eyes as black as anthracite, yet a bit jaundiced in the sclera. Athletic, bordering on muscular build, small perky breasts. And not a day over 25. “Hi, um, thanks,” said Walter. “I’m America. You looked thirsty and lonely,” she said, in faintly-accented English. Her face was radiant. Walter was intrigued. “I’m Walter. Thanks again for the drink. Do you want to get a booth?” As they walked toward the booth, America lost her balance, giving Walter an opportunity to be a gentleman. She laughed, blamed it on an irregular paving stone. Once in the booth, they talked, awkwardly at first, more comfortably as time wore on. America learned that Walter lived in Tucson but had moved there from San Marcos, a town in northern San Diego County. Walter left Southern California during the Uprising only reluctantly and only after losing his wife. He took the same package most SoCal refugees took five years ago, a $50,000 relocation credit plus a military escort for those willing to relocate to Arizona, New Mexico or a handful of places further east. Tucson was a popular choice, a major metro area relatively close to the Mexican border that was too hot and dry for zombies most of the year. Walter had been a tenured professor at UC-San Diego until the Uprising. Now the campus was a charred ruin and he taught at a community college. As Eduardo delivered a second round of margaritas, the conversation turned to America. She was born in Mexico but immigrated when she was seven. She grew up not far from Walter’s hometown of San Marcos in Oceanside, a quaint, if somewhat gritty, beach town immediately south of the massive Marine base, Fort Pendleton. She graduated Oceanside High summa cum laude and did two years at Stanford. Then the Uprising. Her family called her and begged her to stay in the relative safety of Northern California. She refused and returned home to a warzone. Her mother, father, and younger brother dead, house and neighborhood burned to the ground by the Marines sent to help. Zombies, it turns out, really hate fire. Too bad humans do, too. Controlling zombies by fire had been euphemistically dubbed chemotherapy for the human population. It killed more zombies than people, but just barely. She was so distraught she didn’t wait for the government subsidy. She just started driving east and ended up, like so many others, at a refugee camp outside of Las Vegas. Eventually she got her head on straight, applied for the subsidy, and headed toward Mexico as soon as the check arrived. She had family in the state of Sonora. With no jobs on offer she couch-surfed with family and lived off the subsidy until she settled in Puerto Peñasco 2 years ago. Now she dealt blackjack at the casino part time. She knew the bartender, Eduardo, from the casino and he sometimes let her slip into the resort without paying the locals fee for a day pass. When their conversation hit an ebb, Walter signaled for two more drinks and suggested that they take them to the beach. Sunset was only 20 minutes away and what better way to end a perfect . . . what, first date? America took his hand in hers and his stomach flipped. He felt like he was 16 again. As they walked, America took another chance to appreciate Walter. Though he was probably in his early to mid-40s, he hadn’t developed the typical pot-bellied middle-aged ‘dad-bod’. For a professor, he had a weight-lifter’s build, muscular and stout. Not tall, 5’ 6”, he had blond-brown hair fading to white at the temples. Barrel chested, well-tanned, beard cropped close, no earrings or visible tattoos. Beautiful baby blue eyes and a kind, rounded face that bore no malice. He wore a loud Hawaiian shirt and vintage board shorts without a trace of irony, the way only a Californian can. No jewelry except for a simple gold ring hanging from a chain around his neck. The sunset came and went. An hour later, the couple continued to talk – about families, about politics, about loss, and about love. The bass drum of the Pacific Ocean beat out an ameliorative melody. Slowly, they got lost in one another and conversation turned to flirting. Their first kiss was soft, tentative, exploratory. The walk back to Walter’s room was full of giggles and high-pitched stream-of-consciousness jabbering. Walter offered her his arm to steady her. Walter, too, was a bit unstable, high on tequila and America’s attention. Once they got to his room, though, Walter was filled with trepidation. America didn’t follow him back to his room to play chess. For some reason, the prospect of having sex with this beautiful young woman terrified him. Physically, he was sure it would be fine, perhaps even great. He felt a familiar swelling in his boxer briefs and knew he could do it . . . but should he? Was this a one-night fling, or was she the real deal? Why was he thinking of Evie instead of America? America put her arms around his shoulders and kissed him. When she looked into his eyes, she saw fear rather than desire. “Hey, no pressure. I like you and I’m down for whatever. We can talk, we can fool around, we can go get dinner, whatever,” said America. Walter smiled and offered a compromise. “How about the hot tub? This is a suite, the hot tub on the balcony overlooks the ocean – great view.” America’s face curled into wicked, mischievous smile. “You appreciate a great view, huh? Well get ready because I didn’t bring my bathing suit.” Without another word, she shimmied out of her shorts and top. She giggled and did a little pirouette, giving Walter a full 360-degree view. After shucking out of her clothes she was wearing only a pair of lacy white thong underwear. Her pert breasts, uncovered, shone in the moonlight like teak pearls. He’d seen all he needed to see. Suddenly, all other thoughts left his mind. He went to her and kissed her as if his life depended on it. She led him to the bed. Seconds later he was deep inside of her. They both found relief, if not love, in the gentle rocking of bodies. They did eventually make it to the hot tub, two hours later. ----------------- The next morning, America woke to an empty bed. She spotted Walter on the patio sipping coffee and contemplating the mighty Pacific. She called out, “Coffee smells good – got more on?” “Yep. Pyrex on the counter. I splurged, its real Kona coffee.” She sat next to Walter and took a sip. “Wow – that’s good!” said America, a warm smile on her lips. “What’s the occasion?” Walter offered a blank stare and said nothing for a minute. “Just being alive. And missing Evie. She loved good coffee.” America said nothing. She could sense Walter had something to get off his chest. “We met in grad school. Boston. She was studying art history – Baroque paintings, Rembrandt, Rubens that type of stuff. Taught herself German, Dutch, and French. Mind you, she was from an insular New Hampshire WASP family, had never travelled further than New York City before college. Art wasn’t really my thing. I was a few years further along, on track to get a combined MD-PhD in public health and microbiology. My passion was, still is, epidemiology.” Walter offered a sad smile. “Lot of good that’s done me.” He gestured aimlessly toward the sea. “Her parents didn’t approve. They never said anything, but they didn’t have to. I share my Guatemalan grandfather’s surname and I tan easy in the summer, even in New England. In their eyes I was 25% too Hispanic for their Episcopalian angel. We got out of there as fast as we could. We got married in Las Vegas where I had a one-year postdoc at UNLV. Soon after I landed the job at UC San Diego. She struggled for a while, volunteered at several museums before an entry level position opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Not her area but she was smart, persistent, a sponge. She learned everything she cold about Franz Kline, Modigliani, Picasso, Pollock, you name it. She spent ever free minute either in the University library or learning the contemporary art scene in galleries all around Southern California. She dragged me to so many shows we started a modest art collection to decorate our equally modest home. Eventually transferred some credits from back east and with even more work she earned a PhD in Arts Management. Worked her way up to a junior curator position, then a senior position. Taught at the U part-time. We had a good life.” Walter drained his coffee, put the cup in the sink, and then returned to the patio. “Six months before the Uprising, the director of the museum was killed in a zombie attack in Los Angeles. Evie was named acting director. Two weeks before the Uprising, she got notice that the promotion was to be permanent. Los Angeles was burning by then and the Board of Directors thought continuity would be best. Frankly, it was hard to find anyone from east of the Rockies to apply for a position in Southern California. Outmigration had started, looting was on the rise. A few minor flares in San Diego County had killed off most tourism. It was bleak. We talked about leaving but with her new promotion we never seriously considered it. I made a few half-hearted inquires with colleagues back east about academic openings but nothing came of it. We upgraded our security system, 4-inch hardened steel shutters activated by phone app, an ugly but lethal fence system, and a bomb shelter with 2 years of canned food and batteries. We both learned how to use and maintain guns for the first time in our lives. Thursday night yoga was replaced by Thursday nights at the gun range.” Walter paused and put a thumb and forefinger to his closed eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. Silent tears gently rolled down his face. When he returned to his story, his voice was think with emotion. “One day, Evie was called into the museum to respond to an emergency alarm. I drove her, stayed in the car. Evie went in with her Glock locked and loaded, escorted by an armed security guard. At the time, it seemed like overkill considering a similar alarm went off a week earlier when a homeless guy got stuck in a secure loading dock looking for shelter. This time it was a dozen zombies. No one saw it coming. Neither Evie nor the security guard came back out of the museum. I saw a few bloodied Zs emerge from the building. A security detail arrived too late for Evie but just in time for the first battle of the Uprising. All the noise drew even more Zs. This was ground zero, moment zero. I should have come with her into the museum. I didn’t. I got out. Sometimes wish I hadn’t.” Walter was quiet. America didn’t know how to respond. What the fuck do you say to that? When America found her voice, she spoke in a soft sotto voce, trying to convey sympathy. “Sounds like you two loved the hell out of each other. She was lucky – you both were lucky – to find that kind of love.” “Yes, we were,” Walter agreed. “Do you want me to leave?” asked America. “Leave, why?” confusion and hurt colored Walter’s voice. “I was sharing – I just thought I owed you the truth.” America offered Walter a pained look. “That’s just it – the truth. I haven’t been honest with you. I like you, but I need you, too. Six weeks after I got to Mexico, Ivanka was elected President. Soon after, the Trump Memorial Wall started going up fast. When they just thought Mexicans were taking their jobs, no funding. But Ivanka’s smarter than her dad, better deal-maker, too, and she embraced all that fringe conspiracy stuff – that the Mexican government engineered the Zombie outbreak and infected the US on purpose as revenge for her dad’s anti-immigrant policies. Last month they started work on the last segment of the Wall. Going rate for a coyote is a $100,000 and rising. I’m a Dreamer, so I was never fully legal in California. I must get back. You can bring me back.” She pleaded silently with her eyes. Walter looked at America in the harsh light of the Pacific morning. He smiled. “You didn’t let me finish my story.” “But . . .” protested America. “Look, I get it. The bartender probably feeds you names of gringos here for the Survivor trips. You’ve been looking for a soft touch who will make a trade – sex and companionship in exchange for a ticket back to the States. Deal or no deal? If I’m not the first, so be it. I’m not one to judge. I had a great time last night no matter how or why it came to be. Be that as it may, I haven’t been fully honest with you, either. You need the whole truth more than I do. We’re both hunting. This is a work trip.” America looked at Walter quizzically. “Work . . . for what, one of your community college classes?” “No. The teaching keeps me sane but pays shit. I run a privately-funded lab in Tucson. A very well-funded lab. We’re researching a cure.” “A cure?” said America, incredulous. “For Zombies?” “Yes. And we’re oh-so-close.” “What are you hunting for,” she demanded, but before Walter could say a word she said it. “A survivor.” “A survivor. I picked up on a few markers immediately – slight jaundice of the sclera, increased musculature, especially of the upper body, rigid posture, poor balance when walking. But I needed to be sure. There are so few survivors out there not already working for a lab.” “So, you fucked me not because I was so charming or hot but because you had to be sure . . . and you saw the bite marks on my back . . .” her voice faded away. “Yes, I saw them. But no, I didn’t go to bed with you last night just to find out. I had to see if there was the possibility of love for me without Evie. Like everyone I secretly hope that the cure will work retroactively and that I can find Evie and cure her and have it all back like it was. But I know that’s bullshit. I’m not even sure if she was killed or converted. If the later, she’s been a zombie for 5 years. No one comes back from that. The cocktail they’re using now only works on those newly converted, and it’s only partial. My cure would be a universal inoculation, a vaccine, plus it would work retroactively on newer converts. Either way, Evie’s gone. Last night helped me see that there might be life, and maybe even love, after.” “But you need a survivor to get over the line.” “And you need me to get through the wall.” America smiled. “Is it painful? Risky?” “Risky, no. Some pain. Not much. Bloodwork mostly. Some cognitive stuff. Bone marrow would be the most painful procedure but nothing you can’t handle.” She considered the offer. “What about the border crossing? The US is requiring a marriage certificate to enter as of last week in the case of a non-blood relative.” “I know. Not a deal breaker. I need a partner in life as well as in the lab. If the romantic part works out, great. If not we’ll figure that out, too,” said Walter. “Hmm. One last question.” It was Walter’s turn to smile. “Shoot.” America walked over to Walter. She was wearing only the white lace panties and a thin cotton t shirt. She straddled him and soon felt herself pushing onto a familiar, growing hardness. “Can you keep up with a younger woman? I’ll need at least one more round this morning for you to convince me.” “Hmm. Only one more? Let’s try for two, shall we?” “You got yourself a deal.” Walter carried America over the threshold to the suite. Two hours and two love making sessions later, the odd couple left the resort. An hour after that, they emerged from the Sweet Memories Wedding chapel, husband and wife. Walter drove his aging Tesla directly toward the brilliant Mexican light bouncing off the gold-plated Trump Memorial Wall. For the first time in a long time, Walter felt a glimmer of hope. In the passenger seat America was hopeful but nervous, too. She was glad to be leaving Mexico, eager to be back in her namesake country. But she felt sure Walter wasn’t giving her the full truth yet. Like her, he had poor balance and a muscular torso. And those baby blues eyes . . . too good to be true? High-end contacts to hide jaundice? What about the unusual scars she’d seen on his body? If Walter was a survivor, too, he didn’t really need America as a test subject. Instead, she suspected he was in Mexico searching for a partner to help make the rarest commodity of all in their zombie-filled world – a child born of two survivors. She kept up with the news and knew the entire scientific community was searching for just such a survivor child, to no avail. America hadn’t taken a birth control pill in three days and neither she nor Walter had even mentioned condoms. America imagined that perhaps, right now, a child was growing in her belly that would end the zombie apocalypse once and for all. If not now, soon. She put her hands over her abdomen protectively and offered Walter a radiant smile as the GPS welcomed them to the United States of America.
